Palatoschisis or cleft palate is a congenital malformation characterized by an abnormal communication between the oral and nasal cavities due to failure of fusion of the palatal structures during embryonic development. This condition may affect feeding, swallowing and survival of the affected animal. This report describes a case of palatoschisis in a bovine calf (Bos taurus), approximately one month old, Holstein breed, from El Álamo farm, Otuzco. Clinical evaluation revealed an anatomical alteration compatible with a failure in palate formation. The animal presented difficulties associated with feeding due to abnormal communication between the oral and nasal cavities. The presence of this malformation represents an uncommon finding in cattle and highlights the importance of studying congenital abnormalities in production systems.
